Montenay Islip, Inc., was contracted by Aetna Casualty and the Islip Resource Recovery Agency in October 1988 to assist with the commissioning, start-up and facility acceptance testing of the MacArthur Waste-to-Energy Facility.
On March 8, 1990 the facility successfully completed a comprehensive 30-day acceptance test and achieved conditional acceptance to operate and process Municipal Solid Waste (MSW).
The MacArthur Waste-to-Energy utilizes a mass burn technology to reduce the volume of solid waste by nearly 85% - 90% (excluding metals). The facility processes residential and commercial municipal solid waste (MSW) at an average of 485 tons per day. Energy - in the form of superheated steam - is recovered to generate electrical power to not only operate the facility, but sell to the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) as well
