The Islip Resource Recovery Agency owns, operates and maintains a 109 acre landfill complex located in the Hamlet of Hauppauge between Blydenburgh Road and Hoffman Lane. The acreage consists of a 13-acre (Phase 1) and 17.5 acre (Phase II) active Construction and Demolition Clean-fill Landfill, a closed & capped 6-acre ash-fill, a closed & capped Municipal Solid Waste Landfill and a Groundwater Remediation Treatment Facility. The remaining acreage is committed to buffer zones, leachate storage facilities, an office, a scale house, maintenance buildings and gas recovery equipment.
The Clean-fill Landfill is a NYSDEC-permitted facility for the disposal of construction and demolition debris pursuant to 6 NYCRR Part 360 Regulations. The Clean-fill consists of double synthetic liner system with leachate collection and detection systems and associated appurtenances.
A portion of the Blydenburgh Road Landfill Complex (the capped & closed MSW Landfill and ash-fill area) is listed on the New York State Registry of Inactive Hazardous Waste Sites as a Class 2 hazardous waste site and on the federal National Priorities List (NPL) as a Superfund site. The site is referenced as New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) Site No. 15002. The selected remediation alternative for this portion of the property was to cap the MSW Landfill and ash-fill, extract contaminated groundwater, treat the groundwater down gradient of the landfill, and recharge the treated groundwater in the vicinity of the site. The Landfill capping and closure for this segment of the site was completed in December of 1993. Construction of the remediation extraction wells and treatment facility was completed in August of 1996.
