Welcome to the Islip Resource Recovery Agency

The Islip Resource Recovery Agency (IRRA) was created by New York state law in 1982 by referendum of the voters of the Town of Islip for the purpose of providing solid waste management services. The core values of the Agency are to benefit the people of the Town of Islip in improving their health, welfare and prosperity. With this purpose in mind, we welcome you the Islip Resource Recovery Website.

MacArthur Composting Facility

The Town of Islip currently operates a compost facility on a 40-acre site along the northern perimeter of MacArthur Airport in Ronkonkoma. The compost facility accepts yard waste, including grass*, leaves, tree and brush. This yard waste is shredded and processed into a rich soil conditioner called compost.

Hauppauge Cleanfill/Landfill

The Islip Resource Recovery Agency owns, operates and maintains a 109 acre landfill complex located in the Hamlet of Hauppauge between Blydenburgh Road and Hoffman Lane. The Hauppauge Cleanfill/Landfill currently accepts clean fill material only; consisting of construction and demolition material.

MacArthur Waste-to-Energy Facility

The Waste-to-Energy facility processes residential and commercial municipal solid waste (MSW) at an average of 485 tons per day. Energy - in the form of superheated steam - is recovered to generate electrical power to not only operate the facility, but sell to the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) as well.

Multi-purpose Recycling Facility

The Recycling Facility accepts recyclables, hazardous material, and electronics free of charge to Islip residents. Recycling materials collected throughout the Town are sorted and processed, then marketed to the recycling industry to dispose of the waste in an environmentally sound and valuable method.
